Birmingham & UAB (Central AL)

• Birmingham AI Swagathon – Wed, Aug 13, 2025, 10:00–11:30 AM – Innovation Depot, Birmingham – A free, in-person hackathon open to anyone (no coding experience required). Participants use AI tools to design new “swag” (custom apparel, drinkware, etc.); winning designs are produced and sold on the group’s website.
• Birmingham AI Meetup (August 2025) – Wed, Aug 13, 2025, 11:15 AM–1:00 PM – Innovation Depot, Birmingham – Monthly community meetup (this was the 8th of the year) for AI-curious attendees and experts alike. The free session (mostly non-technical business audience) includes networking, a tech update talk, and hands-on demos of AI tools; a free lunch (pizza) is provided.
• Using AI in the Classroom: Academic Integrity – Thu, Sep 4, 2025, 11:30 AM–1:00 PM – UAB (Lister Hill Library, Birmingham) – A workshop for UAB faculty/staff on generative AI in education. Attendees practice using AI writing/information tools for professional communications (emails, reports, flyers) and discuss how to address academic integrity concerns in the AI era.
• UAB Continuing Education – Future Tech: AR, VR & XR Powered by AI – Wed, Aug 21, 2025 (virtual) – UAB School of Nursing (online) – A 1-hour webinar exploring how AI is powering new augmented/virtual/mixed reality technologies. Open to educators and technologists, this session surveys emerging AI-driven AR/VR/XR applications and their future impact.
• UAB Continuing Education – AI Tools for Curriculum Integration – Thu, Sep 18, 2025 (virtual) – UAB School of Nursing (online) – A 1-hour training for educators. Presenter Chris Hickman demonstrates step-by-step how to incorporate AI tools into course design and curriculum development.
• UAB Continuing Education – AI & Student Success: Chatbots – Wed, Oct 16, 2025 (virtual) – UAB School of Nursing (online) – A 1-hour webinar for educators on using AI chatbots in student services. All educators are invited to learn how chatbots can be used for early alerts and personalized student support to improve success.

Huntsville

• AI Innovators of Huntsville – Monthly Meetup – Fri, Sep 12, 2025 & Fri, Oct 10, 2025, 6:00–8:00 PM – GigaParts Store (Huntsville) – Recurring community meetup (2nd Friday each month) for AI developers, students, and enthusiasts. The local nonprofit group’s mission is to share practical AI knowledge and ethical practices. Meetings feature member project showcases and roundtable discussions of AI topics; all skill levels are welcome.

Mobile / Lower Alabama (Fairhope Area)

• Lower Alabama AI (LA-AI) Hatch-a-Thon – Thu, Jul 24 to Wed, Aug 7, 2025 – Fairhope & Mobile – Gulf Coast’s first two-week business hackathon. Co-hosted by LA-AI and Hatch Fairhope, this “HATCH-a-Thon” gives teams 14 days to develop AI-driven solutions to real local business challenges. The kickoff was July 24 in Fairhope, followed by a build phase (July 24–Aug 7) and a public Demo Night on Aug 7. Focus is on practical impact (quality over speed).
• LA-AI Meetup (Lower Alabama AI Meetup) – recurring monthly – Fairhope/Mobile area – Free community meetups on AI topics. The LA-AI group (based in Fairhope) meets bi-monthly on the 1st and 3rd Fridays in Fairhope and also gathers every last Friday in Mobile (at the Innovation Portal) for interactive sessions. Meetings are open to anyone (novices to experts) and feature demos of AI applications, discussions of local use cases, and networking. For example, a session was held Fri Aug 29, 2025 at 3:30–5:00 PM in Mobile, AL.

Tuscaloosa

• Copyright and Fair Use in the Age of AI – Thu, Oct 23, 2025, 11:00 AM–12:00 PM – Virtual (University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa) – Free webinar hosted by UA’s Office for Research Ethics. Targeted at students and faculty, it examines the evolving legal/ethical landscape of AI-generated content. Topics include how copyright and fair-use rules apply to writing with AI (e.g. ChatGPT) and concerns about AI‑created works.

Statewide/Virtual

• The Dark Side of AI: The End of Traditional Training as We Know It – Wed, Aug 7, 2025, 11:00 AM–12:00 PM – Virtual webinar (Alabama ASSP Chapter) – Free online seminar for occupational safety professionals. Discusses how AI undermines the integrity of online compliance training (e.g. verifying learner identity and engagement) and what this means for employers. Covers compliance risks when AI can “undermine” standard e‑learning safeguards.
